V is for Vagenda (Part 22 – Betrayal)

V is for Vagenda (Part 22 – Betrayal)

"You want to believe that there's one relationship in life that's beyond betrayal. A relationship that's beyond that kind of hurt. And there isn't."
    Caleb Carr

Betrayal

Remove love from life and what remains?  There is no longer any joy to be had in anything, as there is no one of significance to share and experience that joy with.  There is no longer any appeal or taste to food, as life becomes something functional rather than something of interest.  The music in your heart stops, nothing inspires.  Color washes away from the universe and everything fades to a transcendental sort of sepia tone save for the things that remind you of love lost – and even that moment of brilliance betrays you as those memories start softly and begin causing nothing but pain the longer they get reflected upon.

A numbness to existence becomes a coping mechanism, and you become devoid of all – including a sense of time passing.  Sure, on a rare occasion it might occur to you that a lot of time had been passing, but before the thought can completely process, you are back to coping in a blanket of mental disassociative numbness.  Desires transition into memories of a former self in a former life where anything was once capable of having mattered.

Mostly out of a total disregard or care toward oneself a routine evolves that serves to pass the days in a somewhat standard fashion.  Once in a while, habits evolve to include an item or two that may seem of very little significance, but serve to make yourself feel a little better about yourself.  Holding doors open for people.  Calling every stranger a respectful “sir” or “madame”.  Volunteering for duties you really hate to do, but you know someone else that otherwise would have been tasked the duty would have also hated.  These little things that can help you take a slight dulling to the standard sharp edge of hate that you ritually tear into yourself with every morning as you see yourself in the mirror.

Every pain and bad turn you suffer take on near religious significance as you accept hardship into your life as something divinely deserved.  You push people out of your life, not only to punish yourself, but to save them from having to cope with you.

Despite all the darkness, in the inescapable dynamic of contrast, you find a light source.  For Vagenda, it was her daughter.

Meanwhile in the Watchtower…

Black Widow looks down at Laura Lantern and helps her up off of the mat.  “Kalyeo, we are finished for today.  Usually you have so much more stamina, and you come at me with all three of yourselves.  Today, I feel like I’m punishing you to continue.  Are you alright?”, she asks with genuine concern.

“I’m fine, just…” Laura goes to state defiantly, but drifts off uncharacteristically.

“You have been increasingly losing focus.  I’m actually getting worried, maybe you should talk about it and get back on track.  Is it your ex?  What is really going on here?”, Black Widow asks sincerely as she gets Laura to her feet.

Laura grits her teeth at the mere mention of her ex-fiancĂ©.  A part of her torn up with the sense of enormous loss and loneliness, another part of her furious at Future Lex Luthor forcing this state of affairs, but before it is too obvious in her facial expressions or body language, composure returns swiftly as her sense of professionalism and commitment to the mission takes over.  Her posture returning, though fatigued, she glances compassionately to Black Widow.  “Of course I’m upset over that.  I’ve had a lot of trouble not thinking about it all the time”, she said, realizing this half-truth is the best way to ensure no one gets wise to her real mission.

“Why don’t we go get a coffee and just…”, Black Canary begins, but is abruptly cut off.

“I’m fine, really, and I’m so busy, like, you really have no idea.  Honestly, cutting things a bit early today already helps so much considering just how much I have to catch up on, so if it is OK, I think I’ll just get washed up and changed out of this Dobok and jump into my work if you don’t mind, ok?” Laura says not intentionally coming off as sharp as she just had.

Black Canary smiles supportively.  “Of course, I’ll see you back in three days then and we can pick-up from where we left off.  Good luck and do try to get some rest, ok?”, she says hoping that giving Laura some room will be best for her in the short term.

It had been months since Laura was actually left in the training area alone.  In fact, up until recently, she’d had a rather difficult time even finding Vagenda and keeping up on things as she had started just disappearing from duties – absent for weeks at a time.  She wasn’t making it to training, getting assigned to missions, or even socializing at the station.

After washing up and changing, Laura took the opportunity to review the training logs to see what Vagenda’s last metrics were, laughing to herself about how pathetically mediocre they must have gotten for lack of training or missions for the last several months.  Laura’s own healer alternate self had a Restoration metric of over 4700, which was the metric Laura was most interested in since Vagenda was a healer.  In fact, Laura had been working so hard and diligently on all her abilities over the last 6 months, she had full confidence in just how superior her metrics would be, and now just needed to see the figures proving it.  “Computer, recognize Laura Lantern, L9, and access training metrics” she smiles hoping no one comes in.

Her own personal metrics come up on the display, and she smiles at the results of her hard work.  “Display training metrics for Vagenda, V1, please”.

Laura smiles as the data loads into the screen, but stops short screaming as she sees the Restoration metric.  “5489!!!???  How?  She hasn’t even been working or training!?”, she snarls under her breath furiously.  Reviewing the history revealed that over the last 8 months, Vagenda only made it to training 5 times.  Of those records, her first metric rated her CR57 with Restoration at 1597.  2 months later it read CR74 with a Restoration of 1830.  A week later, she rated CR84 with a Restoration of 2194.  6 weeks afterwards, it was CR89 with a Restoration rated 3032.  The last record showed CR104 with Restoration 5489.  It didn’t make any sense!  You need discipline, dedication, diligence, and commitment to training and real mission experience to hone your powers in any meaningful way.  Laura’s perfect attendance and unfaltering commitment to bettering her selves was commonly acknowledged as unrivaled, and Vagenda’s been largely MIA!  The data was impossible!

Laura, trying to overcome her anger, and not consider it jealousy, started to calm down.  She tried to rationalize the data, and then noticed something she had previously been too angry to notice.  She had overlooked the date of the last record.  It was today!  Vagenda was here today!  That means the mark is likely currently on the Watchtower right now…

“Computer, close logs”, Laura states flatly, recomposing herself, and strutting out of the room.

Meanwhile in the Hall Of Doom, Future Lex Luthor monitors Laura’s actions and behavior with an amusement, thinking to himself how he hadn’t anticipated how competitive women can be of each other when he first managed to manipulate dynamics such that Laura worked for him.  Luthor was thrilled to see how short tempered, unfocused, and out of sorts Laura Lantern was becoming, and impressed with how skillfully she manipulated Black Canary for noticing.  However, Luthor knew this was but step one symptomatically of his plans for Laura.  Having the benefits of foreknowledge left him with strategies Brainiac had used in the other timeline to weaken and ultimately defeat almost every superhero he encountered, save for the ones he was solely responsible for creating by virtue of having brought back Brainiac’s Exobytes from the future and allowing them to rain randomly upon the human race in this time. Seeing as how all the powers contained within the Exobytes were derived from heroes he had already watched fall to stratagems designed in the future by Brainiac, Lex was not surprised his plans were working where implemented now on the newly formed heroes.  While reflecting on his own designs, and confidence in them, Future Lex Luthor suddenly had his train of thought interrupted by in incoming com request.  He smiled, seeing who it was, and antagonized “You had better not be wasting my time with empty updates.”

“I have eyes on the mark.  She’s in the Aquacultural Garden’s area with someone named Mass Annihilation.  I haven’t seen him before.  Should I recall the other Laura’s and get on point now?” asked an eager Laura Lantern.

“No.  I have new missions for them and they are uniquely positioned to execute given where they presently are.  You will have to manage without them for the time being.  You know what you have to do from here now that you’re able to make contact” jeered Luthor, closing the line of communications abruptly.

V is for Vagenda (Part 21 – The Abyss)

“Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.”
    Friedrich Nietzsche

THE ABYSS

“Report”, commanded Future Lex Luther.

“Your mark has been more interesting than originally anticipated, Lex.  Though small, pink, bubbly, and in innumerable ways an endless point of frustration, I’ve made significant inroads into gaining her trust.  She has an amusingly pathetic weakness to flattery, and it is embarrassingly easy to exploit. I’ve managed to isolate her from the constant company of many others by assisting her to form a rogue league called “The Pink Patrol”. It is primarily made out of Mistycal, the mark, and myself at the moment, and I intend to fully discourage growth. On a brighter note, she’s dying. It seems that only a limited number of people are aware of this. I’m not yet privy to the details, but Superman seems to understand the problem, yet is nevertheless unable to resolve the issue. Batman has spent an extensive amount of time trying to develop a solution, and these efforts have also failed.  She is closest to Mystical, and soon will be closest to me. She had been close to a large number of people from the league called “Grey Wardens” and “Justice Girls”, but so far my efforts have been able to keep her isolated from most of those for months now. Her powers to heal continued to increase in intensity, making her an increasingly popular choice for missions. She’s develops a reputation within the watchtower. I’ve been able to maintain the isolation of achievements and negate the effects of most of this by praying on her insecurities. She does know that a lot of people talk about her, and often can worry upon whether or not what’s being spoken about her is positive or not. Simply planting the suggestion that she’s paranoid and controversial has left her unbalanced enough to focus more and our small group rather than the larger community within the watchtower. Though effective now, I may need to attempt to draw her within my league and recruit more assistance should the popularity continue to grow unchecked,” concluded Laura Lantern.

Lex reads over his previous reports, alternative sources, and begins considering what new information was just been put forward.  “If what you say is true, then that much conversation about her is eventually going to lead to people talking directly to her in the Watch Tower. You may need to work harder to guarantee that your cover is not compromised” he chides.

“I don’t anticipate this becoming an issue Lex. She is quite naĂŻve, and so long as I can keep her insecurity managed my tactics shall continue, she will come to rely upon me for emotional reinforcement” gloats Laura Lantern.

“Insufficient,” decrees Lex Luther. “I’m sending another mole within your fold who was much more controversial on their own. Their arrival will be unexpected, and highly debated. Convince Vagenda of your moral tenacity by a sticking up for this person whenever they are questioned or persecuted by anyone who may be suspicious of her arrival. This will inspire further trust in you from Vagenda, and also protect your cover. If anyone has a desire within any league she’s connected to, or within the Watch Tower, to discuss someone who’s newly frequenting with the heroes, this person will become the subject of debate and conspiracy theories and shine in ways you never do.”

“What hero could you possibly have on a payroll that could have an effect like this?  Just who are you sending, Lex?” Laura exclaimed.

“Don’t presume to question me, and watch your tone, pawn.  Not a hero.  Expect Winter Widowmaker in four days, and don’t forget to act surprised!  Oh, and before I forget – you are going to kick your fiancĂ© out.  Make it sudden and paint it tragic.  Let Vagenda feel like she is holding you together emotionally.  Bond.  Believe me when I tell you that the timing couldn’t be better.  This isn’t debatable – just do it and do it tonight.  Luther out.”

The small holographic screen emanating from Laura’s wrist communicator faded as it powered down.  Gritting her teeth, she made her way towards the Watch Tower’s Main Hub.  As a spy, she knew that she was elite. She had special talents and abilities that she used to fantastic effect. She was three people after all: Laura Lightning, Laura Lantern, and Laura Landstrike.  Many in the Watch Tower were accustomed to the concept of the character avatar, but Laura was a rare case where she was one person who could interact with others as anyone of her three forms, and she could do so as all three simultaneously.  At the very least, when speaking to people through one avatar, her other two would be surveying the terrain around her, giving her an enhanced sense of her surroundings.  It is a tactical advantage few could ever enjoy without technological assistance. Each of her bodies had separate talents and powers, adding to her overall arsenal and tactical diversity. Despite this, she still found herself gritting her teeth in this very moment over two things. Firstly, there was her growing envy over her mark, Vagenda.  Secondly, there was the fact that she had to force a grin and bear the condescending commands from her master, Future Lex Luther.  Laura considered herself superior to those around her due to her natural advantages, and taking orders from anyone never sat well with her.  Laura stews on the news and thinks to herself “Now he presumes to control my personal life and more importantly – where the hell is Vagenda?  Are you seriously telling me my own mark is standing me up?”

Annoyed, but true to the plan, Laura executed the cold and calculated plan, starting with sending a text to her fiancĂ© – making it clear that things are over – immediately.

Meanwhile, back in Vagenda’s quarters…

The silence is barely broken by music softly floating through the air in pure blackness interrupted only by the light in one small corner of the room from an LCD faintly illuminating the small, timid frame of one Vagenda, accentuated by her pink top hat.  The image repeated in skewed reflection in the glass window beside her – the deep blackness of space beyond.  Her door is locked.  She’s been alone like this – slowly staring at one old picture after another – hour after hour.  No calls.  No meals.  No indication of snapping out of it.  Tears finally begin to well up – it’s been nearly 24 hours – as the music is interrupted.

“We need to talk,” states Batman over the Comm channel.  “Now…”

“Uh-huh,” she answers shaking.

She spins startled as suddenly her locked door merely opens abruptly, and Batman steps in.  “You’ve been going over those all day,” he says, pointing at the monitor.

“Uh-huh,” she answers shaking.

“You’ve known you were dying for a long time – but this is about something else, isn’t it,” Batman says as he sits next to her on her bedside.

 “Uh-huh,” she answers shaking.

Batman turns his gaze away from the monitor image and directly into her eyes.  It seems to be an endless silence until she breaks down.

“Uh-huh,” she answers shaking – trembling.  Finally, crying out of control.

Batman pulls her in closer holding her steady.  “How do you know?” he asks, looking at the image of the man on the screen.

“I don’t know!” she answers trying not to scream through the tears, ashamed of losing composure – helplessly spiraling emotionally simply knowing he is gone.

He holds her tighter.

In silence.

In the dark.

His name was Jonathon Ryerson.  He wasn’t her boyfriend, or her daughters’ father, or her ex-husband, or even someone she seen or spoke to lately.

To most, he was no one of any significance what-so-ever.  To Vagenda…

He was her soul.  He was who she was originally destined to be with.  He was the one person that occupied her mind whether she wished it or not.  He simply knew her thoughts, and she his thoughts – at all times.  He was what made the world re-enter a sync and rhythm that made it seem as though it couldn’t help but to bend to ideals whenever he was present.  He burned the blue into the sky, a color that somehow just wasn’t real anymore when he was away.  He was her other half.

He was true love.  The only trace in the universe that was hers and hers alone…

And now he was gone.

There in the silence, in Batman’s grip, for the first time in her life – she simply couldn’t hear his mind or feel him in hers.  She just knew and couldn’t explain it.  This dreadful horrific loneliness consumed her.  She would never feel his soul in the universe again.

“His…  his name was… J…” she stutters.

“Jonathan Ryerson.” Batman completed for her.  “I figured it out after noticing you had images of the same person sent to your terminal for 12 straight hours.  I looked him up.  You dated briefly in high school, but there was something more, wasn’t there.”

The emotion came into strong welling bursts ripping apart her ability to hide her feelings as he spoke.  Struggling through it she asked “How…”

“A car accident.  It was snowing in an area where the highway was being renovated.  The car followed the painted lines from the original road straight off of the new construction.  He died quickly – he didn’t suffer.”

Vagenda stared off into space – into the vast endless emptiness that now seemed to hold as much for her as in any other direction she could have ever chosen to direct her gaze.

She always lived for her daughter all of these years, but this cut into her differently than anything else could.  This cut into who she is at the core, leaving her changed inside – less.  She never realized how significant that connection was until now that it was gone forever.

The first time they met was at a Teen Youth Center dance club.  She was being harassed by a guy she barely knew named Michael.  She left the room where the pool tables were located into the next room just trying to get away from Michael when, suddenly, she spotted Jonathan sitting at a table with some of his friends.  Her eyes locked onto Jonathan’s and that was the beginning.  They knew.  She sat next to Jonathan for protection – and felt safe.  They didn’t say hello.  They didn’t introduce themselves to each other.  They knew.  Somehow, inexplicably, what mattered was known.  Even more interestingly, the world seemed to know also.  No one else at the table reacted like the really ought to have.  No one asked who she was.  No one asked why it was Jonathan and her, and not someone else with her.  When Michael discovered where she went, he started over to her but stopped – and somehow he knew as well.  He turned around and never bothered her again.  It was just a new fact of life universally accepted upon sight by anyone who came in contact with them when they were together.  After the dance closed, they left together, still not talking, and went for a walk along the train tracks in the moonlight.  They got to an overpass bridge and sat down on the edge, her head on his shoulder.  After the city was becoming silent in the night, they walked back to the main road, and she gave him her phone number.

A day later he called her and asked if she was free that after noon.  About an hour later she showed up at his door out of breath and sweaty – she had jogged the entire way there from town.  Out of breath, they went up to his room, and laid on his bed.  He was going to put on a movie but lit some incents called “Nirvana” and they  both instinctually started shaping their hands over it to forms shapes with the smoke that came from it.  Hearts, squares, spirals – such a comfort when someone knows you so well, and so instantly.  Things did start getting heavy soon and she stopped once she realized just how far things had gotten, pulling back and asking “should we talk about this.”  He smiled back “yes we likely should.”  That was they knew they were a couple, and that it was true that they really did have this connection.  It was not a fantasy in her head – nor was it for him in his head.

At the end of the school year she found herself going to the prom with him.  Her mother was protective, and skeptical because he was a senior in high school and she was in grade 9, but once she seen them together in the same room reality adjusted accordingly like it always did somehow.  They were not in the actual gym that the prom was being held in for very long – and instead went outside to the football field where they danced alone together.  Within minutes, a rapid series of lightning strikes started shooting out of the sky.  It was a freak storm that came out of nowhere, as if the world simply wanted to provide them with a light show that was solely for them to watch.  They danced as the lightning clashed over and over, from their vantage, directly over the gymnasium.  As quickly as it came, the storm had broken up and the clouds dissipated as they left the field.

Vagenda began to fear this bond between the two of them, and pulled away – frightened further by knowing there is no way for her to truly pull away.  He was in her mind and she knew he felt what she felt – she could feel his reaction to how she felt.  There was no escape from the dynamic.  The part of her that pooled self-hatred bred a feeling of unworthiness; a skepticism that this thing between them could be really what it actually was.  Ultimately the idea that she was too young for something this powerful emerged.  Though they never officially “dated” again – they could never truly be separated.  Not on the plane of existence where souls unite.

He was everything that made her feel complete and wonderful, and to that end, in the physical plane – she pulled away.  She knew she was wrong to do it, because she could feel how he felt about it.  He knew why she was suffering this and gave her all the room to overcome it and come back to him when she was ready.

Years later, Jonathan was working a night shift at a fast food restaurant.  He hadn’t seen or heard from Vagenda by mail, e-mail, or phone in years.  He had since moved to the Pacific coast and was in a relationship there.  He suddenly had a bad feeling and told his manager he had to leave immediately over a medical emergency.  He couldn’t explain why to anyone there because he had no evidence that anything was wrong to present to them, but he left in a hurry not caring about what consequences might come later.  He got home and looked up some old phone numbers and found Vagenda’s parents old number.  He called and found out that Vagenda had just been taken to the hospital in a city about 4 hours from them – they had just found out themselves shortly before he called.  No one asked how he knew 3000km away that something was wrong.  He just knew it was bad – and in the end it was the first signs anyone had detected leading to the condition she has that is killing her.

A year later, he was living with a girl in Westwood, California when he had a nightmare.  He was a form of energy, shaped like an exotic Chinese dragon.  He had giant majestic wings with talons staggered along the length of them.  He had a dwelling in a tunnel – this was his domain.  He had one treasure, and it was this precious glowing green egg.  Very tiny red creatures seemingly made out of tiny specks of red lightning started invading the cavern looking for his egg.  He would breathe great fire upon them, killing them by the millions protecting what was his.  He was very successful for a long time, but as time wore on, they continued to return in greater numbers until finally overwhelming him.  Realizing his breath could no longer kill them all; he clutched his egg and wrapped his giant mighty wings around it and himself forming a shield with his body.  In time, they killed him, and destroyed the egg.  In the real world he awoke no longer in his bed, but very paralyzed and on the floor.  He was sweaty and out of breath.  His girlfriend was frantic, hovering over him, so thankful he woke up.  Without explanation, he demanded she immediately grab a phone book and look up Albion Hudson, dial it, and hold he phone to his ear for him.  She didn’t understand, but she did exactly as he asked.  He still could not move as Albion answered the phone excited at who had called.  Albion exclaimed “Jonathan – wow, I cannot believe you just called my house – you will not believe who just got here.  We literally are just getting back from the airport.  I will put her on.”  Vagenda came on the phone.  Jonathan explained the dream he just experienced – that he was still not able to move.  There was an awkward silence that seemed to last quite a long time until Vagenda finally answered “I think I can explain why you had that dream.  I just flew in to tell my mom in person that I’m pregnant.  No one else but you knows yet.”  It was already understood – it was now merely confirmed.  There was no sense that this dream was fantastically far-fetched, unrealistic, or impossible.  This was reality for Vagenda and Jonathan as they knew it and they just accepted it for what it was.

Despite the entire universe agreeing that these two souls simply were for each other, and all inhabitants in that universe agreeing innately that this was simply the case – they somehow stayed apart.  Endless stories such as these that proved it over and over for years, and something was in the way.

Now that he was dead, it was as if half the living force of the universe died with him.

Vagenda only ever sought to be understood and loved, and no one could ever do so more completely than Jonathan.

Vagenda’s daughter Raine understood.  Raine showed much evidence of having a very similar functional innate mental bond as well.  Raine remained what Vagenda lived her life for.

Every picture Vagenda flipped through on her terminal for the last 24 hours was, for her, a long and intense vivid memory of stories such as these – filled with painful obvious proof of what they had, what they could have been – moreso, what they should have been.

To Batman, it was a face that kept coming up repeatedly.  She had accessed them enough times in a small enough time frame to get noticed.  It was enough notice to trigger Bruce to find out who the man in the images was.  However, but the stories behind all of these images, once shared brilliantly between two minds, now lived within Vagenda and Vagenda alone.

This wasn’t the death of an ambiguous man mostly unknown to the world.

This was the death of romance.

V is for Vagenda (Part 20 - Sleeper)

V is for Vagenda (Part 20 - Sleeper)

Vagenda walked down the hallway to her room. She laid in her bed contemplating what was really important to her, but failed to summon the will to get back up that day. She poured over mission logs from the previous week trying desperately to ignore how empty and hollowed out inside she felt. The growing divide between Vagenda’s life as a hero and her real life as a mother and younger sister to Slash began to weigh heavily upon her.
Increasing responsibilities, both to the Justice league and to the world, continued to take more and more of her personal time away from her. Her eyes poured over literally hundreds of mission logs and dozens of simulations. It was hard to believe that all of this had taken place within the context of three months. Having an eidetic memory certainly does have its negative side effects, and one would certainly see one now should they have walked in and observed as the gender poured over all of these mission logs. She remembered each in exquisite detail and held so many feelings and memories to them all. To anyone who may have seen the Vagenda pouring over the logs as she was, they might think she was in some sort of trance. A consequence of an eidetic memory is the ability to relive an event internally at any point time in the future, without any guarantee of control over when a past event is re-experienced. Reliving the past doesn’t take long, but with so many logs one can easily get lost for indiscriminate amount of time. It is so easy to envy those with the ability to forget.

SLEEPER

Reliving can be an escape. Reliving can be a drug. Reliving can feel the void and emptiness when all you need was a hug. Vagenda missed Raine so much that the very thought of it was painful. Facing impending mortality compounds of this. She continued pouring over the logs reliving weeks and weeks of events per minute, until a knock on her door stopped or a deferred seemingly trancelike state.
Vagenda got up and answered the door. Zatana stood before with a concerned look on her face and asked if it would be okay to come in for a few moments to talk. Vagenda straightened out her shirt said “of course! Please, come in!”
Vagenda smiled, joyfully surprised, a Zatana waltzed straight in and made herself at home taken a seat on Vagenda’s couch. It somehow reinforced Vagenda sense of friendship with Zatana, yet in Vagenda’s mind Zatana would not look completely within her own element in this moment unless she also had a cup of coffee. With that in mind Vagenda stepped into her small kitchenette to prepare 2 cups of coffee, while asking her “to what do I owe the pleasure?”
“I’m actually here to talk to you about your dream state,” Zatana said, getting right to the point.  “I’ve been following a lead that I need to speak with you about.”
“My dream state?” Vagenda asked, as she prepared a Bavarian chocolate blend.  “How did you know…? How could you even know of been having trouble sleeping lately?”
“You’ve been having trouble sleeping lately?” responded Zatana surprised.  “I honestly had no idea, and we can talk about that as well, the first I really do need to talk about another aspect of your dreams.  Something you once shared with me regarding a nightmare that you had two months ago left me feeling uneasy. We all have hopes and dreams, fears and phobias, and we often explore and develop these themes within ourselves through dreams. The first dreams that you had shared with me were ones that you felt had come true and later point in your life. Vagenda, this static the described waking up to after having that nightmare two months ago - the nightmare about your death - has this ever happened before or since?” Zatana’s tone was becoming slightly unhinged, as though there may be some sort of fear in the answer.
Vagenda came back into the living room, handing Zatana her coffee, and hoping she would like the blend. Vagenda sat at the opposite end of the couch, holding the coffee up to her lips but not taking a drink - just savoring the smell - intentionally mimicking what she often observed Zatana doing with her coffee in the past in hopes to come to love it as much. Vagenda smiled, working hard to convince herself that this was working.
Zatana took note began to giggle.  “What are you doing?” She asked smiling.
“I’m teaching myself to enjoy a simple pleasure in life” answered Vagenda very matter-of-factly.
Zatana smiled, uncertain if she should find this funny or be deeply flattered. Her natural expression seemed to suggest she felt both. The gravity of this inquiry, temporarily suspended from reality by coffee - only Vagenda, thought Zatana.
The two of them prolonged this new lease on levity by patiently enjoying their coffee. Too many people feel the need to fill the air with meaningless words, with pointless conversation, mere chatter with no point other than to pass the time for those incapable of comfortable silence. The truth is, the next few minutes of silence turned out to be the best part of the day for both of them.
“You don’t even really like coffee, do you?” asked Zatana, confident she was reading Vagenda accurately.
“Nope” said Vagenda bluntly, “but I just know I can learn to – someday – if I keep trying.” Vagenda put her cup on the coffee table.  “But yes, it has happened before, and it has happened since. The nightmare was different. There were so much static in the room - I mean, the quilt was on the ceiling, the sheets hovering a foot and a half over me, and small sparks crackled all around me as I moved through the room until the energy finally dissipated. With everything else that had happened lately I thought it was important to tell someone.”
“And I’m glad you did, Vagenda. I want you to understand that I am here for you, but I really do think that there is a correlation between your dreams probability of coming true and the amount of static surrounding you when you awake from these dreams. This isn’t to say that you are some sort of fortuneteller or seer like Layla from Themyscira.  Seers and fortune tellers seem to have a connection to the timeline in such a way as to be able to see the future, or parts of it.  Though I do think your dreams are visions of sorts, I do not believe that the outcomes they portray are set in stone. I believe they show things how they might turn out, but that these potential results are avoidable.  I also believe that, the more static you produce, the more likely it is for that future to come to pass” Zatana explained.
“But my nightmare!” Vagenda exclaimed.  “Are you telling me that I’m destined to die that way?  My room, all that electricity…”
“Now hold on, V! Settle down. Take a deep breath. That’s why I wanted to be the one who talked to you about this. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. Keep in mind, these are probabilities, not certitudes,” said Zatana reassuringly.  “Besides, if we’ve learned anything lately it is that even a future that’s already come to pass is mutable. Future Lex has surely demonstrated that to us.” Zatana shifted in her seat closer to Vagenda and held her hand. Vagenda went to put her coffee back down onto the coffee table, her hand trembling inadvertently revealing how shaken she was.
In the moments that they sat there in silence, all of the painstaking efforts made by Batman and Superman in order to try to find a solution that could stabilize her permanently, so that she could live longer, flashed through her mind. We all die, after all. No one lives forever. Anyone could die at any time for any reason and not see it coming, right? Perhaps knowing how it’s going to end is an advantage. People commonly take so much for granted, be it the company of loved ones, their own personal health, or their own personal mortality. Perhaps it could be a strength and advantage to persistently be staring into one’s mortality, unafraid.  Vagenda rationalized such over the next few breaths, and even Zatana could feel her pulse slowing.
“Look, I know this is a lot to take in all at once. Why don’t you…”
“Tell me you weren’t about to say sleep on it,” said Vagenda playfully trying to bring levity back into the atmosphere. They both smiled as Vagenda squeezed Zatana’s hand back reassuringly.
Meanwhile, deep within an underground Cadmus lab, a security detachment had been dispatched in response to a silent alarm that had been tripped inside the facility’s primary server warehouse. With stealth and military precision, all exits were blocked as the team closed in upon their target. Once everyone had signaled that they were in position, they made their move. Within seconds the facility was secured, and the target surrounded at gunpoint from 12 angles.
“Your 1 minute and 48 seconds late,” scolded Lex. “Now holster those arms before I feel unwelcome.”
Following the captains lead, they all holstered their arms and stood at attention.  “Yes, sir! Sorry, sir! We will begin drills immediately to improve our response times sir!” stated the captain, speaking for all.
“Gentlemen, you are dismissed,” said Amanda Waller, walking past them towards Future Lex Luther. She knew that this was not the Lex Luther from her timeline, and that he really was an intruder. She also had the good sense to know that no one in that detachment would have been of any assistance should Future Lex Luther prove to be hostile.  “I know who you are. So do you care to tell me what you are doing here?”
Lex smiled, “You changed some of the protocols and added some silent alarms that I wasn’t aware of.”
“So glad you approve. A lot has changed since you gave a substantial percentage of the world superpowers.” Amanda replied.   “You still haven’t answered my question.”
“Relax, Amanda. I still own this facility and I’ll do what I please.” Lex responded annoyed at the challenge.
“Is that so? Last time I checked you’re from an alternate timeline after having traveled back from the future and my cheques are still paid by the Lex Luther from this timeline,” Amanda snapped.
Before she could blink, Lex lunged at Amanda and she found herself held by the throat up into the air with the strength and simple ease she knew that the Lex from this timeline was not capable of.  “You’d do well to remember who your superiors are. Make no mistake that I am Lex Luther and you are infinitely replaceable. You will find out exactly how replaceable you truly are should you ever get insubordinate with me ever again,” Lex said calmly as he slowly placed Amanda back down onto the ground.  Amanda gasped for air as he let go of her throat.  “I need a full report on what enhancements have been made, and I have another task for you. I need you to activate this sleeper, “Lex commanded, staring a hole through her eyes and handing Amanda a file folder.
“Right away Mr. Luther.” Amanda said excuse herself from the room.
Lex turned his attention back from the temporary interruption to the screen replaying the footage he was able to recover. As Lex poured over files from his Cadmus sites he discovered that there was a period of time that had been missing in the security logs at the Arizona Cadmus site. The Lex Luther of this timeline was not successful in his attempts to recover the lost data, but Future Lex had an advantage in technology allowing him to succeed where the other Lex had failed. With great fascination, he watched Klarion and Gentlemen Ghost liberate Vagenda from the facility.
The next day Vagenda made a rare appearance in the cafeteria to share breakfast with other heroes from the watchtower. Mystical lore exclaimed she came in, and waved her over to their table.
“Is that really what you’re having for breakfast?” asked Laura lightning, staring quizzically at a bowl of fruit loops with chocolate milk.
“What’s wrong with this?” asked Vagenda innocently.
Mystical just smiled at the two of them and added “don’t mind Laura, V.  She obviously isn’t ready for your toasted strawberry jam, bacon, and ketchup sandwiches!”
Vagenda mystical just started laughing as Laura exclaimed “That is disgusting!  Please tell me you are joking.”
“Still thinking about Zatana?” Mystical asked.
Normally this would be where Vagenda would exclaim something along the lines of “how did you know that?” while feeling completely shocked. However, with the gravity of what had been on her mind of late, Vagenda just rolled with it in this particular morning. Of course Mystical knew about Zatana. She’s Mystical.  She always knows, after all.
“Yes” smiled Vagenda, accepting her friend’s inexplicable foreknowledge.
“Okay you two, what am I the last to know about this time?” inquired Laura enthusiastically.
Vagenda was used to sharing all of her personal details with Mystical, but Laura was new to the table - and as such Vagenda was hesitant to share personal information with her.  Mystical read Vagenda’s body language and helped to steer the conversation into other directions. As the conversation was directed masterfully through some of the details and goings-on in both Mystical and Laura’s own personal lives, Vagenda began to feel more secure talking about her own personal life in front of Laura as well.
Finally, Vagenda opened up to both of them about what had happened the night before in her apartment with her conversation with Zatana. The three of them sat around the table discussing the implications that this new power may have for Vagenda, though only Mystical was aware of the nightmare that Vagenda had had a few months ago. Tastefully, she did not bring it up - and silently, she worried about how Vagenda must feel about that particular dream.
Mystical took Vagenda's hand into her own, and told Vagenda that she would always be there for her, no matter what may happen.
Laura also took the cue, and compared the three of them to a sisterhood, like a legion of healers that also should be feared by others who would dare cross them.  Like a terrible trio!  Laura took a look at Mystical and Vagenda, and then examining Vagenda’s clothing she suddenly exclaimed “We are the Pink Patrol!"
